Coat Closet Organization Makeover | $100 Room Challenge | Progress Update

Coat Closet Organization Makeover | $100 Room Challenge | Shelves

I've been slow to start my coat closet organization makeover project until this week, even though it's week 3.  We had a long weekend trip planned and the kids went back to school last week so there hasn't been much renovation time. But we are on a roll now! I'm also including some back to school organization for this closet.  I'm making it over as part of $100 Room Challenge hosted by Erin of Lemons Lavender & Laundry, all of the bloggers involved try to makeover a space for under $100!

So here is the stack of shelves that came out of two closets in our attached mother-in-law apartment during its renovation.  I was really hoping to use these completely, but the sizes weren't working out.  We will only be using two of these.

The good news is, we also had most a piece of plywood (because our scrap pile is large) that we cut down to make the shelves.  And we ripped down some wider scrap boards on on the table saw to copy the edge pieces of those reclaimed shelves.  We also made smaller strips of wood to use as braces for the shelves.

We figured out where we wanted the shelves to be and drew a level line to line the support up to.  I decided I wanted to maximize shelf space and make two shelves above the rod.

We found the studs and marked them so we would know where to nail.

We used larger strips to support the larger boards that will span the length of the closet.

We gave the end support boards a little angle cut to dress it up a little.  It also makes the shelves look more finished.  Since the nails for these little boards only hit one stud, we added wood glue to the back of them.

I also scraped the popcorn ceiling.  I am no expert on this, it's only the second time I've done it and I just followed other tutorials I found online. I sprayed it down with water and scraped it with a metal scraper.

Then I went over the areas that seemed to need patching with some spackeling.  I'm not sure how this is going to sand out.  I'm thinking I may need to go over the entire ceiling with some drywall mud.

This is going to look great! With the shelves and non-popcorny ceiling, it'll feel like a brand new space!
